Loosen Up! is a nascent, unreleased [[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/748 Greasemonkey]] script that will relax the layout of popular websites, letting you keep your browser window as narrow as you like (or at least narrower than those narrow-minded webmasters would like).
